Dear HOBY Ambassadors and Parents,
As you all know, this is a time of profound changes in our lives. We at HOBY are working hard to be responsive to the ever-changing state of our world while maintaining our future viability. The decisions we make as an organization today will impact HOBY for years to come.
Hannah Dalpaiz, former Director of Recruitment for Central PA HOBY, recently notified you that the Central PA HOBY seminar was canceled for 2020. This is incorrect. HOBY is planning an outstanding HOBY seminar this year for you and your student, albeit virtual. Over the last few weeks, we’ve heard from parents, students and counselors across the country that HOBY is needed more than ever. We have designed an online curriculum containing all the core elements of the HOBY seminar which has successfully inspired youth leaders for over 60 years. The fun and interactive curriculum will introduce the HOBY Leadership model, developing Ambassadors leadership skills and reminding them that they are part of a bigger community of future leaders.
We will have national speakers not normally available to local seminars such as Carla Hall, celebrity chef, entrepreneur, author and inspirational speaker, Rainn Wilson, actor, author, philanthropist and speaker, Jason Latimer, International Award winning magician and more. More importantly, the virtual seminar will provide much-needed variety and inspiration at a time when people are feeling uneasy about what the future holds. Let’s face it, so much has changed and been lost these last few months; participating in the HOBY Virtual Seminar will prepare students for the challenges that lie ahead. Once the pandemic has subsided we will be holding an in person event to complement the virtual experience.
We understand Ms. Dalpaiz, also offered refunds to the registrants. While each site is, of course, permitted to offer refunds that they are economically able to sustain, HOBY will not be doing so for two vital reasons. First, we simply do not have the financial resources to give refunds and remain economically viable. Our volunteers understand that the value of HOBY’s programs are not limited to a brief 3-day seminar, but extend for a lifetime. We are doing everything we can to make sure HOBY weathers this storm in order to be a resource for your children into adulthood. Many of our volunteers, in fact, are alumni of over 20 years.
We will be in touch when the finishing touches are put on the program, and we look forward to connecting from our living room to yours. This will be the first of many programs to come and are excited to welcome you to the HOBY family.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience. Together, we will get through this.
